Assessing traveler compliance with the social optimum: A stated preference study

The development of Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) with en-route navigation systems has opened the door to new traffic regulation policies such as collective route guidance based on social costs, i.e. routes that minimize total travel time. However, a critical element for their efficiency is compliance travelers recommendations. It well established optimum different from user equilibrium, where users drive shortest path. Thus, even when knowing recommendations are common good, may still choose not follow given and they wish. In this paper, we use stated preference survey choice situations real network investigate traveler levels time sacrifice vs several benefits. Two kinds benefits considered: congestion alleviation emission reduction. data collected allows us precisely quantify proportion would be ready accept in order take alternative level benefit. line literature, our analysis confirms decrease increase sacrifice. Moreover, it suggests way recommendation intended could play significant role compliance: display an advice message path (in case) shown more efficient than only showing additional information reduction case).
